  14. SUBJECT:  OPS - More opportunities to use your RACES
  15.  
  16.      Contrary to popular belief, it does not require a disaster,
  17. war, or even an emergency to use your RACES and other
  18. communications volunteers in government service. From the reports
  19. we received in the last thirty days, here are typical official
  20. duty activities by these volunteers:
  21.  
  22. - Maintaining personnel records, processing applications,
  23. preparing ID cards, taking ID photos.
  24. - Antenna work party, installing communications equipment,
  25. maintaining communications equipment, driving government vehicles
  26. to pickup and deliver communications equipment, courier service,
  27. and drive and staff comm vans.
  28. - Watching and reporting river rise readings during a storm.
  29. - Forest fire communications.
  30. - Reprogramming computers. Improving packet communications.
  31. - Planning and conducting conferences and meetings.
  32. - Hospital nets. Weekly net duties at the emergency management
  33. office.
  34. - Writing and distributing information, training, and standard
  35. operating procedures.
  36. - Training others. Self-improvement training.
  37.  
  38.         In summary, there are many skills to use and opportun-
  39. ities to be met. While not all volunteers will participate
  40. in such activities, there are those who find such events
  41. rewarding and will serve with enthusiasm.
